    Kitson's account of visiting the misses Bulwer and viewing some of their collection. Thought that some of his Cotmans may have actually been by Rev.J.Bulwer and notes birth dates of Bulwer, Muller and Jackson.

    May 21. 1929. Stayed with the Misses Bulwer at Dalling near Uckfield - Saw their portfolios - They extracted about 20 drawings from the illustrations to 'Collinson,' where they sold that collection in 1907. A great many of these are pencilled 'Rev. J. Bulwer' by Mr Bulwer QC - but look more like Jackson of Bristol - particularly 2 very beautiful ones of 'Leigh Woods'. They are mostly found about 1829-1833. There are several by J. Skinner Prout. & Bulwer was then much influenced by Jackson. There is one of a canal & bridge which might be Cotman but is probably Müller. There are no sketches for the Somersetshire series, but I found the opinion that all the drawings in my collection which have printed titles are by Bulwer, touched in many cases by J. S. C. & the ones with the 'Gothic revival' lettering are by J. S. C.
    Bulwer was curate at St Mary's Radcliffe. 1824-1833 (C. F. B. Introduction to 'M. E. Cotman' (Walker)) & lived in London, curate at St James Picadilly. 1833-40. Müller, 1812-1845, was too young to have affected Bulwer's style. Müller (aged 21) also came to London in 1833. Bulwer sent him to Norwich to do the 'Cotman Norwich Cathedral' interior in 1831. Bulwer was from c.1798 (not 1804, C. F. B.) Samuel Jackson was 1794-1869 - elected ass[ocia]te R.W.S. in 1823.
    There are a lot of pencil drawings of Bulwer's in the Misses Bulwer's portfolio - influences by Jackson (horizontal shading of trees) of scenes in Wales - etc. dated 1829-30, 31. {Sketch of tree, showing horizontal lines.}
