{Kitson's diary}
March 21. 1929. Went to V&A Mus[eum] + saw many of the Cotman drawings. Went to call on Mr. A. A. Allen. 13 Queen's Gate Gardens S. W. 7. He has (1) a superb sepia of the "Arches of the Cloister of the Abbey Church of St Georges de Bocherville [Boscherville] J.S. Cotman. 1820" 8½ x 12⅝.
Also (2) a late strongly coloured, but not too garish w.c. of a street scene in a foreign town (? Italian Alps) Some egg paste. Carriages and figures very [stagey?] and nice. Inscribed "Cotman - 10¾ x 7½. Dickes p. 361. 'A street view, probably in the Tyrol.'*
To Mrs Roberts with best Respects of J.S. Cotman?'
Mr A. A. A. stated that he had in his house in Scotland
(3) A sepia el[evation] of west end of church of St Gilles near St Lo.
(4) A panoramic view of Caen. Pencil. 1818.
(5) Postwick Grove. Pencil, like soft ground etching, but revised.
March 18, 1929. Called at Walker's - he had 2 large pencil drawings of figure subjects. Very 'dated' & damnable.
(1) Robinson Crusoe on the Sands, spotting the footmarks of Friday - horrid figure landscape suggestions at back good + fruity. "J. S. Cotman" [J.J.]
(2) A group of 2 figures - a prisoner and his captain. "4/34 Cotman" He asked 8 guineas. I suggested he should send them back whence they came.
