Jan. 26. 1929. Visited Leicester Galleries: saw a small oil Cotman: 10½" x 16"- Boats with figures & a black dog, on a river.' (c. 1823?) figure in stern is waving a scarlet cap.
No. 306 VI. 6 . (coll: S.D.K) is a pencil sketch of this painting.
Fine, big handling - (250 Guineas).
Ex Coll: W. Clabburn of Thorpe, who also owned Cotman's oil 'View of Norwich Castle from Foundry Bridge' - Now in Sir H. Bacon's Coll: see Dickes p. 318.
{Sketches of boat with figures and black dog}
Went to Christie's on the same day, looked up sale of books on March 20 - 1907. Lot 182 (sold by the Misses Bulwer) 'Somersetshire an extensive and valuable collection of upwards of 1400 engravings and 700 original drawings - including a large number in colour by W. J. Müller, Rev. J. Bulwer, J. Cotman, S. Prout, S. Jackson, W. W. Wheatley, & others.' Sold for 15.5£ to [Rivenell] bookseller; acting for Paul Foley, Stoke Edis, Herefordshire.
Stoke Edis was burnt down a few years ago, & Mr Foley died soon after. Mrs Foley is now engaged in rebuilding the house. The salved books from the fire are preserved in boxes in Hereford.
Lot 186. Savage's Carhampton - '95 illustrations, consisting almost entirely of highly finished coloured drawings of churches, seats, views etc. by the Rev. J. Bulwer & J. S. Cotman.
