Nov. 23, 1928. Went with W. W. Russell to the R.A. Library of the R. A. Looked at the list of students. Cotman never was a student here, nor was Girton. Looked thro' the catalogues of the British Instit[utio]n & verified the Cotman exh[ibit]s given by Dickes. There was also a loan exh[ibitio]n each year. In 1815 "The Castle of Bentheim Ruysdale. W. Smith Esq. M.P. " is No. 94.

Nov. 29. '28. Called on Randall Davies 1 Cheyne Gardens. He has a beautiful pencil study of a girl (? by Constable), a drawing in outline of a 2 arched bridge (? the bridge near Eggleston Abbey over the Tees.) & a good many small pencil sketches all signed J. S. Cotman in Spencerian Script - but some look weak and M.S.C-ish.
He showed me a large watercolour 'P. S. Munn 1804' of a lake scene with the light centred on a rock, r., & water to left & in front of it, hills behind., 14x20½. Very like the 'J.S. Cotman 1803' Gormire - probably Llynogwen, which he exh[ibite]d at R.A. in 1804.
