picture. [crossed out - It ap] The photo gives me the impression of a much finer picture than my own & I can't help thinking mine is an unfinished one & that this is what he arrived at finally. The ruin itself in mine seems perhaps near [crossed out - in] its finished state with unfinished surroundings. Mine has the ruin larger & with more architectural detail. The Cardiff one seems more of a picture. Of course I am only judging from the photo & as Cotman went to Byland so much while he was here it might be worth while examining dates more closely to se if there is anything to support a surmise that he was drawing there after Sept. 7th 1903 [sic]
I should try Rokeby for those pencil drawings. I can't see any possibility of a lawn at Gilling where I thought I saw those buildings.
    Yours very truly
    Hugh C. Fairfax-Cholmeley
