    Dear Sir
My son handed me your letter re the Cotman coat of arms. I have in my possession an old seal belonging to the family which gives the Crest, Coat & motto and also another seal which belonged to Edmund Cotman J.S.C's father - I enclose impressions of both by which you will see the crest is a Stags head & the coat [[a]] sable with chevron "vair" with three arrows impaling lozenges.
I have never seen it in colour & am much interested in Davy's plate for it is evidently the Cotman Coat.
I remember the drawing you refer to being in Mr Boswell's shop but can offer no opinion as to it being a selfportrait.
Certainly the [[the]] silver shield with red chevron is not Cotman's and may be "artistic licence" for the remainder is somewhat similar & his own coat may have been running through his mind when drawing it.
    Yours faithfully
    Grahame Cotman

    Sydney Kitson Esq.
