    51 COTMAN (J.S.) Etchings of Architectural and Picturesque Remains in various Counties of England, but chiefly in Norfolk: the 5 series complete, containing in all 240 very fine etchings of Landscapes, Celebrated Remains, etc., 160 of which are in Norfolk, with letterpress descriptions, 2 vols; thk impl folio, half morocco, uncut edges, scarce, £3 10s. 1838

    {Diary entry}
    Sunday Oct: 29 – dined with Sir M. Sadler in hall at University College - afterwards with him & Mr [crossed out - Gordon] Percy Withers – to his 'stock room'.
    Saw 2 large sepias - * (1) labelled ‘Falaise’, but probably Mortain – Castle on hill. rugged rocks. rabbits in foreground – superb – 12 x [18] – exhibited Tate ‘22. No. 166.
    (2) A valley looking out to sea. I think Cherbourg, but I don’t remember the title “[Iles?] d’Avranches”. 12 x 19 – exhibited Tate ’22 No. 159 -
    * (3) A delightful painting, ochre, interior of a cottage in Wales, 1803 – much pencil play – small c 6” x 9”
    (4) A small early watercolour, old house in a gateway, a lot of pencil work in it.
    (5) Elevation of a house in process of demolition. Watercolour. C 12 x 10 – masterly, simple. C. 1814 (?) (an oil belonged to Paterson, bought by Sir M.S.)
    * (6) Walsingham Priory. No. 22 in Bulwer Collection.
    (7)Crucifixion. Walsingham. pencil. No. 47 ditto.
    (8) Palling Church. No. 1 ditto.
    (9) Sculthorpe Church. No. 70 ditto.
    Two or three other churches from the Bulwer Collection in neutral tint or pencil.
    (10) Falstaff’s tower - Caister – large watercolour [[c. 15 x 11]] 17½ x 13½ c 1805 – good. Exhibited Tate ’22. No. 184.

    Best thanks. Mortain it shall be. I will write it on the back of the frame and stick your post card there too, though it means sacrificing the photograph of the lime kilns.
