    MASTERS OF ENGLISH WATER COLOUR
    On Saturday, January 16th, at 3 p.m.

    The origin, traditions and nature of water-colour. Its early use for illuminations in manuscripts and for miniature painting; its employment on the Continent in the 16th and 17th centuries for landscape and figure drawings. The false assumption that water-colour was a purely national and original art in Great Britain. Its development as a national art; the "tinted drawings" of the 18th century; the Topographers and PAUL SANDBY, R.A. (1721-1798).
    THOMAS GIRTIN (1775-1802) and J.M.W. TURNER, R.A. (1775-1851), born in the same year; their companionship; their new outlook. Girtin's pencil studies and influence of Canaletto. His inventiveness and vision transform water-colour. His technical methods; his harmonious colour and unity of design. Girtin, at the age of 27, died learning. Turner continues, and through his long life of 76 years is the supreme master of technique. Turner's various phases; his constant advance in the rendering of light and atmosphere; his dramatic imagination; his amazing industry.
