To Sir Charles Holmes' autobiography, "Self & Partners, Mostly Self" (Constable, 1936) There are 2 references to Cotman - tho' he is not mentioned in the index.
    (1) p. 108 [When at Oxford 1887-89] "Another scholar & friend B. S. Cornish, had inherited secondary Sketch Club drawings, among them two worked in monochrome by Cotman. These introduced me to a larger & grander style than anything I had previously seen, but I was much too inexperienced to understand or imitate his quality."
    (2) [1903] "The Norwich visit was prompted, in part, by a request from Robert Dell to write an article on Cotman for the "Burlington Magazine" which came out in March 1903, on a scale of unexampled magnificence."

    English Water-Colours
A special feature of the annual exhibition of English water-colour drawings of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries at the Palser Gallery, 27, King Street, St James's, is a collection of water-colours by David Cox, an artist who steadily rises in appreciation. "Landscape near Llangollen," of about 1850, is an excellent example of the impressionistic freedom he finally attained, and, by way of leading up to it, the rather hard "Old Cottages near Battersea," one of the earliest of his known drawings, and the looser "Near Bettws-y-Coed," of 1845, and "Near Capel Curig," of 1847, may be quoted. There are several good examples of his contemporary, Peter de Wint, and affection goes to the work that brings him the nearest to Cox, the lovely sketch of "Landscape with Trees." Varley, who influenced Cox in his earliest work, is well represented by "River Scene with Anglers." An excellent water-colour by a little-known member of the Norwich School is "St Benedict's Abbey, Norfolk," by Thomas Lound (1802-1861), and among other things of special interest in a collection of 107 are "Landscape," by Alexander Cozens, "An Italian Lake," by J R Cozens, "Landscape with Church and Hay Cart," by Paul Sandby, "Near Chepstow," by Edward Dayes, and "Distant View of Farnely Hall, Yorkshire," by J M W Turner.
