    THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF SCOTLAND

    Edinburgh 1. 6th Dec., 1935.

    Sydney D. Kitson, Esq.,
    Thornbury House,
    Kidlington,
    Oxon.

    Dear Sir,

In reply to your letter of 5th December about the water-colour “Castle Eden Dean” by Cotman, I can find no trace of a date on the drawing and I do not know how the suggestion was made “painted about 1803”. This may have been suggested at the time at which we purchased the drawing. I think the Tate Gallery Catalogue of 1922 must be in error in saying definitely “dated 1803”.

    Yours faithfully,
    Stanley Cursiter
    Director.
