10 Drawings sent for my inspection by AUGUSTUS WALKER 20-V. 27 - which were weeded out from the Walker Collection by C.F.Bell, as being either doubtful or copies.-
(1)Upright of the round tower at the W End of 'Stratton St Mary, Norfolk - Depwade' written in pencil on margin in J.S.C's writing. 555 on drawing - bottom right. The same subject as Cotman's etching & similar in style to several genuine monochromes of the same period in the Bulwer Collection: but too feeble in handling in some parts to be his work. - in Bell's writing on mount. 'J.S.Cotman' written on mount - possibly by Cotman himself. 10 x 7¾.
The etching published in 1817 - has 'sketched in 1804.' pencil & india ink wash.
{Kitson sketch of:}
(2) Horizontal S.E. view of SUTTON CHURCH 7¾ x 12½. pencil & india ink wash - 'J. S. Cotman' in Bell's writing on mount. c1808?
(3) Horizontal SOUTH SIDE OF CATFIELD CHURCH. 7½ x 11⅝ pencil in india ink wash. in Bell's writing on mount (Whatman 1854) 'J. S. Cotman compare the engraving in excursions through Norfolk.' - no figures or birds in drawing - The church is larger & lower in drawing than in engraving & sky is different, but engraving is obviously copied from this drawing. (same period as no. 2)
